Turkish is the official language of Turkey, as well as the unrecognized Republic of Northern Cyprus. Together with the Gagauz, Azerbaijani, Turkmen and Khorasan Turkic languages, it forms the southwestern, or Oguz, branch of the Turkic languages. Turkish is an agglutinative language and often uses affixes, in particular suffixes, or endings. A single word can have many affixes, and they can also be used to create new words, for example, to create a verb from a noun or a noun from a verb root. The modern Turkish alphabet based on the Latin alphabet was adopted in 1928 as part of the Turkish language reform initiated by Ataturk. Turkey switched from the Arabic to the Latin alphabet, simultaneously getting rid of most Persian and Arabic loanwords in the language and introducing everyday Turkisms and Turkic-based neologisms.
