Chinese is the most widely spoken modern language, spoken by more than 1.3 billion people. The Chinese language has many colloquial variants of idioms, often mutually incomprehensible. Standard Chinese, based on the Beijing Putonghua dialect or Mandarin, is used as the main language in the People's Republic of China and in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Currently, Putonghua is being actively promoted as the main language in mainland China. From the second grade of school, the entire educational process begins in Mandarin. It is currently spoken by about 800 million people in China. Other significant variants of spoken Chinese are Ming (75 million), Wu (74 million) and yue (68 million), which include the popular Cantonese version of Chinese. The Chinese language has two main variants of writing: Chinese traditional characters currently used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, and Chinese simplified characters used in mainland China. In addition to mainland China, Singapore also officially switched to Chinese simplified characters in 1969.
